Distance Learning

Counselling Qualifications
A counselling qualification is next to useless without experience of counselling. It would be a bit like learning to drive from a text book without ever getting into a car.

If there is no alternative for you, other than distance learning, we would suggest trying to obtain experience elsewhere. For example, would you be able to help your local church, the Samaritans, Relate, Victim Support, Childline, during the evenings or at week-ends. They may even offer to train you.

Qualified Counsellors
Irrespective of what qualification they hold, we believe nobody should be able to call themselves a qualified counsellor unless they have actual counselling experience, and in the long run, experience is far more valuable than any particular qualification. There are many highly effective counsellors with years of experience but no formal counselling qualifications at all, but we would suggest the ideal is a balance of both ongoing academic and practical experience.

The usual route to becoming a counsellor is via a counselling college, but some quite experienced counsellors have received substantial training and obtained substantial experience in other ways.
