Considerations
Becoming a CounsellorThis is one of the most frequently asked question received by 'Counselling'. The main questions we get asked relate to qualifications, experience, or qualities required by a counsellor.
Counsellor Qualities
The qualities you need to have as a counsellor include personal integrity, genuineness, warmth and responsiveness. You should be a member of a professional body such as 'Counselling', should be able to explain the code of practice that they work to, the limits of your confidentiality, and the range of your counselling training and experience. It should be obvious that maturity is a prerequisite for a counsellor.
The main items to be considered, therefore, when becoming a counsellor are:
1. Do you have the necessary experience and personal qualities that your clients would want from a counsellor?
2. Do you adhere to a recognised professional code of conduct?
3. Is there a complaints procedure or system of redress for your clients if you break that code?
4. Do you have recognised academic qualifications in counselling?
